That insignia error with Kawalsky drove me nuts but it was early days and the Air Force wasn't as involved with them at first. It happens later on in the series with Jack after he gets promoted to Major General. He goes back and forth with having one and two stars on his collar.
I always get people to watch the movie version of the first two episodes; it's much better than the pilot. I know Amanda still cringes about the first few episodes. She was very unhappy with the outfit she had to wear for the locker room scene in "The Broca Divide". That happens with a predominately male writing staff although "Emancipation" was written by a woman. It always takes actors a while to settle into their characters and Michael, Amanda and Chris were so young then. I actually thought Michael did a creditable job of channeling James Spader and Rick purposely made Jack different. Once we got Peter DeLuise, Martin Wood and Andy Mikita doing most of the directing, things settled down.
