The air is heating up and Jack needs some cooling down after running into Sam at the store. Written for [livejournal.com profile] obsessed_psyco.

The grocery store was abnormally crowded—everyone stocking up on sunblock and bottled water. It was going to be a hot one they said. At least in the low-90s. Even with the A/C blowing full blast the store felt like a sauna. Jack tugged at his shirt, fanning his hot skin.

He maneuver through the crowded aisle. All he wanted was some beer and a pound of hamburger. Burgers and beer—cant beat that on a hot summer day. He was staring at the depleted choices in the beer aisle when a couple kids came screaming by riding on a cart. He took a step to avoid being flattened, bumping right into someone. The contents of the woman's hands clattered to the floor.

"Sorry," he mumbled, dropping down to pick things up. He noticed her toes first—painted pink—and trapped in some kind of strappy contraption that he assumed was meant to be footwear. They looked uncomfortable to walk in, but what they did to her legs set his heart hammering. And her legs were, simply put, perfection. Well toned and tanned calves morphed into supple thighs that disappeared under a flowery skirt. Oh, god. He stood up, trying not to look at her chest that was fighting to escape the halter top of the dress.

"Um, I- Uh, I think..." His mouth went dry and apparently his head went dumb when confronted with a beautiful woman. He needed to get out of the mountain more often. "I think you dropped these." Real smooth, O'Neill.

"Sir?"

Jack's head shot up. "Carter?" He was pretty sure his voice cracked. "What are you doing here?"

She gave him a strange look then picked up the cheese and mustard from his hands. "Shopping."

"Oh, right." His eyes darted around, his thoughts racing to inappropriate places. He needed to think about something else.

"Are you all right?"

"Hmmm, yeah. Why?"

She frowned at him, taking the rest of her items. "You're acting kind of weird."

"No, I'm not," he said quickly.

"That was weird," she pointed out.

"Was not."

"Was."

"Not."

Carter rolled her eyes. "Whatever you say, sir." She shifted her weight, looking reluctant to leave. Jack racked his brain to think of a reason for her to stay. They both looked away at the same time. "Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow."

"Right, tomorrow. At work. Which we go to... tomorrow." Where she'll be in a uniform that covered all of the bits Jack was forcing himself not to look at.

Carter was still giving him a strange look. "Okay. Nice running into you, sir." Her lips twisted into a small smile. Jack watched her walk away and—damn him—he couldn't pull his eyes away from the way the fabric of her dress slid over her backside as she went. Things were so much safer in the winter.

This was bound to happen. It was only a matter of time. It's not like Jack had never seen Carter out of uniform before. He wondered why he was shocked. Maybe it was the way the morning sun glinted off her hair, or the fact that her nails were painted a startling shade of red that matched her lipstick. Maybe it was the way she laughed, so at ease while she chatted with Daniel.

It could have been any of those things. But the truth was, it was the dress. Light gray with red stripes. Classic style, like his mom used to wear. The sleeves just barely covered her shoulders and the collar went straight across in the front. The waist fit tight, but the skirt hung loose coming just below the knee. She looked amazing.

"Jack," Daniel called, finally noticing him gawking from ten feet away. Carter turned that mega-watt smile at him, her eyes sparkling. He needed to calm his racing heart before he went over there or she'd know. She'd be able to hear it pounding in his chest and she'd guess what he'd been thinking.

He swallowed hard then forced one foot in front of the other. "Hey," he mumbled as he got close.

"Sir," she said softly, head ducked.

"You look nice." Crap, did he just say that out loud.

Her face flushed almost the same color as her lips—it made her all the more beautiful. "Thank you, sir."

"You, uh-" She licked her lips, eyes darting over him then back to his face. "Look nice, too."

Jack frowned down at himself. He was in cargo pants and polo shirt. When he looked back up at her she was biting her lip.

"Thanks, I guess," he said, still a little confused. His mind kept getting distracted by her lips. She rotated between licking them and biting them. All Jack wanted to do was kiss them. He looked away as soon as the thought crossed his mind.

Carter gave a little cough. He glanced at her out of the corner of his eye. She was blushing again and looking away. Jack wondered if she could read his mind.

Daniel cleared his throat. "If you two are done flirting, can we get going? I told Janet we'd pick Cassie up at eleven."

Jack's head snapped up. So did Carter's. For some reason Jack couldn't fathom, he let his eyes slide over to Carter. She was giving him the same sideways look, a tiny smile pulling at her lips. Jack grinned back before returning his eyes to his shoes.

"You guys know I'm still here, right?" Daniel threw his arms in the air. "I wish you two would just get a room already."

He couldn't help it—their eyes met again. Jack was pretty sure the heat he felt wasn't from the sun. He wondered if Carter felt it, too. Although he probably shouldn't be thinking about that. Daniel started mumbling to himself then wandered off. Jack didn't know what to say. Well, he knew what he wanted to say, but all of it was inappropriate coming from a commanding officer to a subordinate. Carter gave him a knowing look. Damn, she could read his mind. Then she turned and followed Daniel, leaving Jack to watch her dress sway around her legs.

The pain is intense. Sam didn't know something could hurt so much. She bites down on her fist, pushes back the tears. There are cameras in here—in her lab. There are cameras everywhere. Prying eyes. There were always so many prying eyes. Her breath hitches as another wave of pain overtakes her. She's going to be sick.

This can't be happening. It just can't. He can't be gone. The wetness behind her eyes threatens to escape. She won't cry. Not when they're watching, waiting for some kind of confirmation. Breathe. In. Out. That's the only thing she can do—breathe. Everything else is shutting down, grief taking over. Breathe. Just breathe.

Slowly, her control returns. She stands up straight, smooths her shirt, refuses to wipe the wetness from under her eyes. That will just give it away.

Calmly as she can, she shuts down her computer, tidies her desk, and shuts off the light. She doesn't look at anyone as she walks the halls. If she didn't know better she'd thinking people were avoiding her as quick as they get out of her way. She's sure she hears whispers, but the words mean nothing.

She makes it just inside her front door before she collapses, the sobs coming in waves that rack her body. A heart-wrenching moan escapes from somewhere deep inside of her—from the very depth of her soul. This isn't right. Nothing is right anymore. Her house feels wrong—claustrophobic. The floor is too hard, the light too bright, the air to thick. She shutters then wraps her arms around her legs and cries into her knees until there's nothing left but an empty abyss where she thinks her heart is supposed to be.

Her phone rings. She doesn't want to talk to anyone. It's persistent. Daniel, of course.

"I should have told him," she says instead of, "hello."

"Sam-"

"I'm an idiot." She can tell Daniel's been crying, too, but her pain is too overwhelming for her to find the means to care. "He- I-" She gulps. "Now he'll never know," she whispers.

Daniel sniffs. "He knew, Sam. God, everyone knew." That doesn't make her feel any better. She hangs up while Daniel is still talking.

It's dark when she finally moves. She uses the bathroom and washes her face, refusing to look in the mirror. She's afraid of what she'll see there. Everything hurts, but mostly the pain is in her chest. A numbing ache that she knows will never go away. She rubs at it anyway.

From across the house the doorbell rings. She's barely aware of it. Probably Daniel. She debates ignoring it, but it rings again. And again. An urgent buzzing that hurts her ears.

It rings once more just as her hand lands on the knob. She yanks it open ready to yell. Nobody. She blinks. The porch is empty. She takes a step out, hugging herself. The street is quiet, calm. A wind picks up. It tickles the back of her neck, caresses her skin. For a second she thinks it lingers on her cheek. Then it's gone, a swirl of leaves kicking up from the steps. Sam sucks in a startled breath.

He knew, Sam. God, everyone knew.

Daniel's words repeat in her head. Her hand touches the spot on her cheek, still warm from the breeze. He knew.

"I love you," she whispers into the night air. Just in case Daniel was wrong.

"Sam, get down."

"Be careful."

"Watch those rocks there."

"Careful, or they'll see you."

"Get down."

"Shhh."

"Sam, watch out for that-"

"DAD!" Her voice echoed through the valley. Jacob's eyes nearly popped out of his head.

"Sam, get down!" It was Daniel this time. She dropped to the ground, a staff blast sizzling past where her head used to be.

Jacob grabbed her arm, pushing her back down the hill. "Our cover is blown."

She grit her teeth. "No, really."

"Sam-" Jacob warned.

"Dad." She yanked her arm free. "I know what I'm doing."

He glanced back at the pursuing Jaffa. "Sure, you do, sweetie."

"This is all your fault," Sam yelled as she jumped into the wormhole.

Jack and Daniel exchanged tired expressions.

"This," Jack said, "is why you never work with family."

Vala said the mission would be a piece of cake. She could get what they needed. Why did Cam ever believer her? Nothing ever goes to plan. Written for [livejournal.com profile] winterjameson.

"Well, this mission is going about as well as expected," Cam said to Daniel.

"Really? I thought it was a little better than normal."

"No one's shot at us yet," added Sam.

"See," said Daniel, "better than usual."

Cam kicked a rock, checked his gun. "Now if Vala would just hurry things along."

"Indeed."

Cam snorted at Teal'c's response. That one word could sum up so much. Just then the curtain, flew aside and a flustered Vala stalked out of the merchant's stall.

"What?" he asked.

Vala huffed.

"What happened? Did you get the stuff?"

She crossed her arms over her chest. "Not exactly."

Daniel rubbed the bridge of his nose. "Not exactly?"

"You said this was going to be easy. Piece of cake."

"Yeah, well, I ran into a problem."

"What problem, Vala?" Daniel sounded like he was at the end of his rope.

"Well-"

Cam sighed. He noticed the merchant standing there watching them. He looked about Cam's age with wavy blond hair and wide shoulders. His gaze roamed from one member of SG-1 to the another.

"See," Vala was saying, "here's the thing." She licked her lips, her eyes darting to the merchant. Cam looked back at him. The merchant was staring at Daniel. Slowly his eyes moved over to Cam's, making his skin crawl.

"Vala, what's going on."

"I was trying to tell you." She leaned in, forcing everyone to get closer. "The thing is my normal- uh, approach- didn't quite work on him."

"You mean he didn't buy the vixen act?" asked Cam, irritation growing. "Can you get the stuff or not?"

She bit her lip. Behind him the merchant cleared his throat.

"Not quite."

"Then what?" Daniel sounded just as exasperated.

Sam's expression suddenly changed. She glanced over her shoulder at the merchant then back at Vala. "Oh."

"Oh? Oh, what? I'm getting really ticked off here. Someone tell me what's going on."

"I think," Sam said, trying to hide a smile, "is that the merchant wasn't interested in her advances."

"I get that."

"In her advances." She emphasized the word, "her."

Cam frowned. Daniel had a similar expression on his face.

Sam rolled her eyes. "He's into guys."

"Wait-" Daniel said. "You mean-" he waved a hand between him and Cam, "one of us?"

Vala and Sam nodded in unison.

"Don't look at me," Cam said. "Daniel's our diplomat."

"I'm not doing it."

"Come on boys, it's not that bad."

"Yes, it is," they shouted at the same time.

Sam apparently couldn't contain her amusement any longer. She laughed into her hand. Vala was smiling ear to ear. Cam hated both of them.

"You're really enjoying this aren't you?"

Sam nodded in response, unable to talk through the giggles.

"We need this stuff," said Daniel. "Someone has to-"

"I vote Jackson does it."

"Wait-"

"Since when do we vote?" asked Vala.

"Right, I order Jackson to do it."

Daniel glared at him. Then glared at Vala. "Screw you guys."

"I think that's what he wants," Sam said through another fit of laughter.

Cam rolled his eyes. "Well someone has to do it."

Teal'c cleared his throat, getting everyone's attention. He'd been silent through the entire exchange which was... exactly like thim.

"What?"

Teal'c held out a pouch. Daniel scowled, taking it from him. He peeked inside then his eyes shot to Teal'c's before sliding past Cam's shoulder. He looked back to see the merchant stretching, a satisfied smile growing on his face.

They all stared at Teal'c. No one spoke.

"Our mission is complete," Teal'c said, walking past them all. "We can return to Stargate Command."

Sam's mouth was hanging open. Daniel looked a little ill. Cam shook his head. The only one that didn't seem thrown for a loop was Vala. She hopped up and down, clapping, then ran after Teal'c. She smacked him on the back and tried to get him to do a high-five.

Cam just kept shaking his head.

"This should be an interesting de-briefing," said Sam.

Daniel groaned.

"Don't go there," Cam said as they turned together to follow their friends home. Yep, about as well as expected.

Daniel's died so many times he's lost count, but this might be the last time. For [livejournal.com profile] phantisma.

don't own... wish I did, but I don't. No infringement intended.

Daniel tried to live his life without any regrets. He fought for justice where he could, looked for the truth in everything, and strived to understand the world and people around him. He was a good friend (he thought) and a good husband (he tried).

He knew he'd made his fair share of mistakes, but he thought, all-in-all, he didn't stray far from the path of good.

That's why he accepted his fate.

He looked up at the man pointing the gun at him. It wasn't the first time, but it was probably going to be the last. He laughed at that.

"What's so funny? You think this is funny?" The guy said, waving the gun around.

On his knees, hands limply at his sides, there was no point in trying to fight. Even with all of Daniel's training he'd never beat a bullet at point blank range.

Figures he'd go out like this. What he didn't count on was that he'd die on Earth at the hands of a regular old criminal. Without his team around him. There'd be no coming back from this, no last-ditch miracle save. This was the end. At least he could say he did it with valor. He'd stopped the man from hurting a woman and her daughter. They ran away, Daniel wasn't so lucky. But those were the breaks sometimes.

He smiled. "Yeah, I kind of do think it's funny." Famous last words.
