Brenna loves onions. I mean really loves them. She eats them any way she can get them. If we are cutting onions for anything (any recipe or, like last night, for tacos) she is right there and we have to watch and make sure she doesn't stick her fingers by the knife before we are done. She has had this addiction since she was about 2, maybe a little younger. She has been known to sneak off and eat a quarter of an onion that we have chopped for tacos before we realize it. She doesn't care that the onions can make you gag they are so strong--she just pops them in her mouth and chews away. Yes, you heard me--she loves them raw. Not many people really like to eat onions raw. These are normal yellow onions, not the sweet variety or the red onions (although she will eat any kind). Today I tried green onions in her salad. At first she didn't want to eat them because she didn't realize they were onions. She kept telling me no, they were yucky. Then I finally got through to her that they were really onions and she went to town. She would probably eat the green onion whole like my mom used to.
The other two don't really have any strange food addictions like Brenna. Owen does like mustard on pretty much anything. Meagan is just too picky to have these kind of strange food cravings. She is a lot like I was as a kid--finding something she likes and sticking with it. It wasn't until I was in college that I really started to try new things or mixing up my dishes with new ingredients that I previously didn't like.
Example--When I was a kid and we had tacos I always made them the same way--taco meat and cheese on a hard corn shell. I didn't like anything else on them and I didn't like soft tacos. Last night we had tacos for dinner. I had 3 soft tacos with meat, cheese, onions, tomatoes and sour cream. I would have also had refried beans (preferably the kind with chiles or chipolte peppers in it), lettuce and black olives if we had them in the house. Tastes really do change.
