yikes! that sounds awful. Aren't cable companies the worst? The last time I moved away from Canada (I move a lot.. sigh) we had *so* many problems with our cable/internet company. They wanted to charge us all sorts of fees for early cancellation (even though leaving the country was listed in the contract as a reason to end the contract early) and they were really weird about taking back our rented equipment -- they wouldn't accept it back at the store and said we had to ship it back to them in a special box they'd send us... which they never did, despite three different requests for one. Then they wanted to charge us for not returning it. We ended up filing a complaint with the better business bureau, which eventually made things go away. maybe that's something you could try, actually. It seems like if their alert system isn't working and they aren't notifying you of bills, they should be able to charge you any fees. and as campylobacter says, if they aren't living up to their end of the contract, they're the ones in violation of it, not you!
