I was in the middle of making dinner when the kids came running in to say the police were out front. My husband went to see what was going on and after I washed my hands I went out there.
There were three squad cars parked across the street and they were talking to the lady that lives across from us (they rent from the same landlady and have only lived here since like December--I don't know them, though). She had her baby and they were talking to her. I told the kids to quit staring and went back in to finish prepping dinner.
My husband came in and said that it must be something with the baby because an ambulance and fire truck pulled up and they were looking at the baby. We didn't know what was going on but I didn't want to be nosy. Another squad car pulled up (making that 4 cop cars, an ambulance and a fire truck with like 7 cops and 3 EMTs and the firefighters) all talking to the mom and looking at the baby. They seemed fine. The baby wasn't crying, the mom seemed calm.
I went out to fix the sprinkler and just after I came in the kids came running back in yelling that it was the dad. I guess the cops went in and hauled her husband out kicking and screaming and handcuffed him. They were trying to stuff him in the squad car when I went back out there.
So, I assume he hurt the baby. That just makes me so sad. I kind of figured domestic abuse. That's the most common call around here but to find out it's against the baby is just... so horrible. The baby (I believe it's a boy) can't be more than 8 months old. He's huge, though. Looks like he's as big as Jack but I've seen him in his carseat and he looks younger than 12 months.
They also have two other kids who are about 2 and 3 1/2-4 years old. I didn't see them through this whole thing.
They're a young couple, not unlike me and my husband when we first started out. We were 23 when we got married. By the time we were 26 we had three kids.
Just sad. I guess the baby was okay because the EMTs left without taking the baby.
