I'm going through my pictures and just realized I have none of them from last Halloween on this computer.  So I checked my external hard drive and they aren't on there either.  Which means they are only saved to my other computer.  Which has no graphics card in it so I can't turn it on and find them.

I guess I never transferred them to the external so now I don't have them on this computer.  I was missing Easter 2011 pictures, too.  I thought I just didn't take any (Easter isn't that big of a deal in our house) but now they might just be on the other computer that I can't get into.  Ugh.

I was sure I had EVERYTHING backed up.  A couple years ago I had to do a complete system wipe and thought I backed everything up only to find out I missed the folder with Owen's kindergarten graduation pictures in it.  So now all I have of that day are 4 edited photos I uploaded to a website (and they aren't high-res in the least).  I lost all the pictures of him with his friends (kids he'll never see again).

Now this.  All I have on this computer from last Halloween are the photos I edited and saved to put online so they are small files, low-res.

Can you pull out the hard drive from the other computer, put it into an external hard drive case with an IDE cable, and browse the drive from another computer via USB?

I could if I had a case but I don't. I think I still have the old graphics card (that I replaced because the heatsink wasn't working) which might run it long enough to load up and pull off the pictures but it wasn't stored properly (just tossed in a box since it was broken) nor do I know where it is off hand. Originally I bought the graphics card and put it in that computer since the hard drives are failing on the computer I'm using now. But the other one was getting really wonky so I pulled the card out and put it in this one (because the original graphics card also broke in this one causing over heating and the issues with the hard drives).

Eventually I hope to get another card. It was like $89 or something from tigerdirect. It's a cheap card because I don't have a big enough power supply on the other computer to run anything nicer. I'm not in the mood to rebuild the entire system (we bought it out of the box from Best Buy in 2007, I think).

It'll just have to wait until I have time and money to deal with it.

Sucks to lose family photos, but at least they exist on a drive, even if it's not accessible at the moment.

All the drives from my old Macs now live in cases. (Most IDE/SATA/USB cases fall into the $20-$40 price range.) I should also back up the data to DVDs & my monster drive, instead of the gajillion CDs lurking around. :P

I stopped saving to CD/DVD when I got the external because I had so many CDs/DVDs because I take hundreds of pictures at a time. I still have the CDs around but I haven't updated them since 2009, I think.

I'm always terrified I'm going to lose pictures (like the graduation ones). Most of the really important ones I now upload to my flickr account, too. It takes forever to upload the full-res ones.

Just looked and 55 of the photos are backed up on my flickr. I'm not sure if that's all of them but it's got to be most of them that I took on Halloween so I can always download them.
