Writer's Block: Cooking Lessons
7 Feb 2008 09:02 am[Error: unknown template qotd]My mother taught me to cook. Or rather, watching my mother cook I learned. She did show me basic stuff when I was about 9. We got our first microwave that year and we learned how to cook with it together (making hot chocolate and scrambled eggs among other things). Then she let me start boiling water and showed me how to make mac n cheese.
I knew how to read a recipe and measure and that was all I needed. I never really needed or ever cooked much when I was a kid. My mom always cooked meals but I knew I could cook if I wanted. In college I sometimes felt the other kids must have lived under a rock. They couldn't even warm stuff in a microwave. My husband was/is the same way. He burns anything he tries to cook and can't follow simple instructions on the back of the mac and cheese.
