If you've read any of my posts about my original fic you might notice a trend called "the story". It's this fiction idea I thought up like 5+ years ago based off of two characters (I'll get to them in a minute). I became a little obsessed with them and put them into all sorts of situations trying to decide how the story would progress to the point that I can't seem to actually write "the story" because I have too many ideas and many contradict each other. It's become a thorn in my side but last year I started writing down snipets and ficlets about Sarah and Tucker.
I think somewhere along the line I kind of fell in love with Tucker, lol. And he's a total jerk (then again, that seems to be my type if you've read my rants about my husband) but I just love him so much.
Anyway, since I can't ever seem to decide what to do with poor Sarah and Tucker (and their friends Kevin and Michelle) I decided the other night that I wouldn't think about them as I fell asleep (my normal thing to do--run plot ideas through my head until I drift off). Sam and Jack popped into my head but I have so many stories for them that already need to be written and I tend to not want to write them as much after I've obsessed over them (something about never being able to get it right after imagining it before sleep).
Anyway, I forced myself not to call the characters I was thinking of "Sarah and Tucker". In fact they had no names in my head for the first two nights. Then the other day they kind of just formed in my head along with a very angsty adventure story that I might start jotting down (if I can find time).
So now I have Abby and Shawn.
Abby and Shawn are co-workers that kind of hate each other. At least Abby thinks Shawn is the biggest jerk in the world. He sure acts like it most of the time, flaunting his good looks and bimbo of the week. Abby is more down to earth, homely, nerdy and not interested in showy Shawn even if all the other women they work with think he's dreamy.
Somehow (and I have no idea how yet) they get stuck in the woods together and have to find their way out and survive. Luckily for Abby, Shawn isn't just all good looks and charm. He was a Boy Scout and took some survival courses, likes to adventure and can actually be pretty nice when he wants to be. In fact he's down right sweet during the ordeal.
At night they try and build fires (when it's dry) and have to cuddle up for warmth. As the days pass Shawn shows more and more of his nice side and Abby starts to see him in a completely different light. At some point they come across an old shack in the middle of the woods, apparently built by a hermit or hunter or something. It's falling apart but has a fireplace and is mostly dry. They stay there a couple days while it storms and Shawn finally confesses that he might just maybe have feelings for Abby which just pisses her off because she's supposed to hate him and he's a jerk and now she's starting to like him because he's being so... human.
Shawn asks her if there is any way he can fix things between them and Abby is so mad she says no and brushes him off. She expects him to go back to being a jerk (it's happened to her before with other guys) but he doesn't. He tries even harder to be a great guy which just confuses Abby more. Finally they find their way out of the forest and stumble into a small town. The sheriff drives them to the hospital where they are treated for hypothermia, minor frostbite, blisters, malnutrition and dehydration. But they survived.
While in the hospital Shawn goes to see Abby in her room and asks her again if he has any chance of making things right. Abby thanks him for getting her threw the ordeal but doesn't comment on a relationship. She does rest her head on his shoulder, memories of their cold nights together flooding through her. He leaves and promises things won't go back to the way they were before (him being a major jerk).
At work Shawn is transferred to another area so they don't see each other as much but he's always sweet when they are close to each other. A few weeks later Abby's friends insist she go out with them and get over her trauma or PTSD or whatever from the forest thing. She agrees just to get them off her back but she's no longer interested in finding a guy to hook up with (not that it was ever a priority for her). She can't get Shawn out of her mind. Her friends force her to go to some party where she runs into Shawn. He's pretty shocked to see her there since she's not known to party. Abby is shocked to see Shawn back with his bimbo of the week. She runs off, upset that she ever let Shawn get to her.
She's even more surprised that Shawn follows her, begging her to talk to him. But she's so angry she just slaps him and runs off. Months pass and she tries very hard to forget Shawn. She switches jobs and moves into a new apartment, she needs a new start. Her friends get together to help her clean and paint her new place and one friend invites Shawn along. She's irritated and frustrated with him being there but he mostly keeps to himself and just helps, not bothering Abby.
As everyone leaves to go out for drinks she finds Shawn out in the yard rinsing paint brushes. She helps him and finally he talks to her. He admits that he's been a real jerk and that he really, really misses her. In a moment of weakness, memories of their week in to forest in her head, she asks Shawn to stay the night...just for "old times sake". They light a fire in the fireplace and curl up in front of it. Before drifting off to sleep Abby whispers that she might be falling in love with him. Shawn tells her he's been in love with her for awhile now.
The end.
Yeah, it's pretty cliche but I love angst and heart-wrenching and all that. And now I kind of love Abby and Shawn.
