The first week of the term is over. I've had my requisite days of crying and thinking I should quit. This was the busiest first week I've ever had--there were so many assignments to do and research already. Oy.

I'm really disappointed in my photos. In my other post I showed all the beauty the Pacific Northwest has, but when it came time to do last weeks assignment everything went wrong. I originally wanted to go out on Tuesday when it was really nice, but Patrick suggested I wait until Thursday when he had a doctor's appointment in Portland that way we'd save gas. So I waited.

Thursday morning I woke up to pouring rain. It rains a lot here (of course) but it's usually sprinkling or misty like. This was a downpour. I don't have anything to protect my camera from the rain and it was so rainy and overcast there wasn't anything to shoot anyway. I went home depressed, hoping I'd get a chance on Friday or Saturday. Then I checked the weather and saw it was supposed to rain the rest of the week. I cried.

On Friday we were coming home from Vancouver and the clouds parted right as we got into town. We parked at Steamboat Landing--a dock where the fishermen all hang out. I had to hurry because the storm we just left in Vancouver was heading our way. I got a few pictures of the Columbia River and the cloudy sky. I resigned myself to turning those in, trying to figure out my best 4.

Then Sunday the rain stopped in the morning, the clouds parted and there was bright blue sky. But I had so much homework to catch up on before 9pm when it was due. Jack came in around 5 and wanted to go for a walk so we drove down the road to Steigerwald. I got some amazing shots there, but it's not what I really wanted. Still, they were better than the dreary water/storm ones from Friday.

These are the pictures I chose for the assignment.

The Columbia River looking west towards Portland (on the left) and Vancouver (on the right). You can see how cloudy it was, but the water was fairly still when I took the picture. I liked how it mirrored the sky. Just moments later the wind kicked up.

This one was taken of the same exact spot just closer up. I also did some coloring to accent the storm. I probably should have straightened the horizon. I was tired, though, and trying to get stuff done by the deadline.

These two were taken on Sunday at Steigerwald National Wildlife Refuge down the road from my house. Those mountains are actually across the river in Oregon. On the left, somewhere in those clouds, is Mt. Hood.

This one was taken as we were leaving the park. It's slightly cropped and has this kind of fishbowl look to it (it was worse before I cropped it). I'm not sure why it did that, but I liked the effect. All the dark green--the trees and hills--is Washougal, where I live.
