The world ends, the moon continues on.

Scotty races through the tunnels, darting back and forth between the throngs of people—mostly miners changing shifts. The elevators are so overloaded he's surprised they don't crash to the level below. He chooses the stairs.

Bursting into the Atrium, he's thrown momentarily—the usually active shopping hub is completely silent, the patrons staring up at the dome stretching across the sky.

"It's true," Scotty murmurs. "They finally did it." He climbs some scaffolding for a better view. Above... below... whatever spins the Earth—large plumes of smoke popping up over the continents. Someone sobs.

Now they are truly alone.

Very nice! I really like that we don't know exactly what's happened to the Earth (I'm guessing nuclear war, but...)

Also, unrelated LJ question: how do you make it do that nifty dividing line? I'm still trying to work out this HTML business.

I thought about expanding the story to explain more of what was going on and about the people on the moon. And how they react to being isolated. But I came up with the idea for the drabble prompt and decided to actually stick to the 100 words which meant all that had to go.

I thought it worked pretty well.
