Yeah, I can see how it would happen that Sam wouldn't see how beautiful she is, because in high school she would have been too frighteningly smart for the boys to approach, and to focused on her goals, and at the Academy she'd be one of only a very few women, and attribute male interest to that, and then there was Jonas Hansen, who was broken and controlling. She clearly thought that the effect of the Shavadai dress was all the costume and not the wearer. It would be a real relief to her to be seen as attractive by someone she could trust.
I like the way Jack is milking the situation for every bit of amusement he can get, right up until she enters the banquet hall, and he can't anymore. I'm betting that at least now he'll be able to go back in and amuse himself once more, secure in the knowledge that the king is a bother, and not a rival.
