So, it's the 6th (at least it still is here) and so far I've kept with my goal to write 750 words a day. In fact I've gone over every single day.
1st: 1276
2nd: 1565
3rd: 1153
4th: 1252
5th: 1767
6th: 3492

All that's for one story I started on the 1st. Each started out representing a chapter but the last one got really out of line so it'll probably be split into two. Anyway the story is turning into a nice SG-1 action adventure with a good helping of whump everyone involved and side of Sam/Jack angst. My favorite kind of story! I have almost no idea where this is going and I'm making it up as I go along. Like I used to write--by the seat of my pants. It's kind of freeing because I'm not sure I'll ever show it to anyone. I'm writing it for me and if it ever gets done I guess I'll polish it up and post it. So far it was 10500 words and is only 6-7 chapters long. It needs a plot other than the whumping. I'm sure one will present itself eventually.

Here's a look at how I write 3492 words:

As you can see it took me 20 minutes to get to 750 words (my record was 19 minutes). And it took me almost 1 1/2 hours to write almost 3500 words. Not bad. If you look at the graph (the blue columns represent WPM typed each minute) you see that little empty minute which happens at about the hour mark. That's when my husband came in to use the bathroom and insisted on talking to me the whole time, distracting me and making me lose my train of thought. Even after I begged him to shut up because I was writing. He just doesn't get it. Up until that point I was in a zone. So says the graph.

I was so into the writing that I stopped doing everything else. All the ice melted in my cup, my back ached because I was hunched over the computer (the laptop sits on a footstool which is obviously lower than my seat) and my hands and wrists were killing me when I finished. In fact I decided to just end the chapter because it was getting harder to make my fingers press the right keys. They were just so exhausted.

Now I'm exhausted, too. When I started at 9 I told myself when I finished I could watch and episode of SG-1 and knit completely guilt free. On average it takes me like 45 minutes to finish my writing. Unfortunately the words kept coming and now it's too late to do anything but go to bed.

I can't sleep in tomorrow because Patrick has PT at 9:30am in Portland. I still have to drive. Ugh. Me and Jack get to wait in the car for an hour and a half until he's done. I'll probably read. Maybe I can convince myself to brave the airport traffic to go over to the shopping center (they have the same exit and it's crazy over there) and go to Target until he's done. Then we'll probably go to IHOP for lunch, maybe IKEA. Depends on if he remembers to bring his pain meds with him because I'm sure he'll be hurting when he's done. If we don't go to IHOP we'll probably go out to dinner just the two of us. It's our anniversary--13 years.

IF your writing "zones" are so intense that they damage you physically, you can't begrudge a 1-minute break.

I suppose. It was just such a nice groove and then there's this empty hole in the middle.

Oh, well. Maybe someday my family will take me serious when I tell them I can't talk because I'm writing. It's not important to them so they don't get it.

I don't look at it as an empty hole; I look at it as a natural and necessary pause that ultimately didn't slow down your overall progress. You're not a machine; don't try to conform to the productivity standards of one. And anyway, the point is producing a good story. If you're not happy with what you wrote, then it doesn't matter how many words of it there are.

If you need to explain to others why they should respect your writing time, compare it to them playing a video game or learning a trick move on a skateboard. Leisure activities also require concentration & uninterrupted sections of time to accomplish skill-building. And playtime is important to balancing your mental health so that you can be more productive when working.
