short story

Our classes for next term opened up the other day so I printed off the syllabuses yesterday. We're only writing one short story for our fiction workshop apparently, but it's due at the end of the first week (Aug 31). It has to be based on an experience we had (ugh), but not autobiographical. Not sure what to write about. My first thought was the treatment center. I already wrote one short story about it (it needs work). I could try to rewrite that for the assignment.
Otherwise I've got nothing. My life is beyond boring. Because of my social anxiety I have never gone out to do stuff like party, clubs, lunch with friends, anything. I sit at home all day or I go grocery shopping or maybe to the park with the kids. Nothing fun.
I guess I could do the cross-country trip thing. That has to be the most eventful week of my life, but I was saving that for a novel.
Oh, I was looking at the few introductions the overachievers have done so far (class doesn't start until the 25th) and I was surprised to find people from other majors besides creative writing. One was a game designer, but he needed the course for his emphasis (story development or something like that) and another was a history major that just liked to write. Then I went to my linguistics class and it was like all creative writing majors, including one that was a professional editor that edited for major national magazines. Another has published several stories and working on a novel. Geesh.
There are a lot of creative writing majors at the school. I've had many in each of my classes.
Oh yeah, an update on photography class: After I complained about the new assignment being bullshit because it wasn't in the syllabus the teacher wrote back that he agreed and that I should complain in the evaluation because he was going to. He was keeping a list if errors and things he found in the class. Then I guess he decided this was big enough not to wait because he went to the administration and they decided we didn't have to do the new assignment since it wasn't in the syllabus.

Date: 16 Aug 2014 05:50 pm (UTC)Have you considered writing a fictional story about your experience with anxiety. I'm actually going to write a story for NaNo this year about depression. Instead of a married mom with kids though, it's going to feature a single woman struggling with depression, but some of her experiences will be similar. I'll be imagining my world if I were a different person.
You could do something similar to that.

Date: 20 Aug 2014 09:39 pm (UTC)It has to be 5-10 pages, double spaced. That's really short for me. I usually single space mine and I can easily write 8+ pages in a few hours and only be a fraction of the way done.

Date: 17 Aug 2014 06:35 pm (UTC)I love a good travel story and think your cross-country trip would be a cool idea. I can't recall who at the moment, but I've read several authors' notes where the author says that their novel started out as a short story and then wanted to expand. So maybe writing a short story about your cross-country trip could be a good starting point to help you see where the novel might go?
