"An Adventurer is You"
21 Dec 2005 02:53 pmHave you heard of this crazy little role playing game that is sweeping across the internet? No? I'm not surprised. If you aren't into RPG then you probably wouldn't even know that such a thing even existed on the internet.
The game I'm talking about is Kingdom of Loathing.
Check it out if you like anything that is absurd, comical or downright irreverent.
I first discovered this game while reading an issue of Game Informer. There was just a small blurb on the side that mentioned an interesting little game on the internet. I looked it up and was hooked. I've been playing since November 21, 2004. I know the date because I just got a note at my in-game message box telling me I am a veteran player.
I don't think I can truly describe the hilarity of this game. You have to check it out yourself to understand. It is unlike any game out there. The visuals are all crudely drawn stick figures and the text makes reference to all kinds of pop culture.
The game has only been in existence for a couple of years but already there are over 750,000+ players. My character, Jennick, is #306,048. During the game you(or should I say, your character) chooses a class and goes on insane quests for the Council of Loathing, culminating in the defeat of the Naughty Sorceress. (I haven't gotten that far yet). Besides the normal in game adventuring, KoL (as the community calls it)offers a large, working economy and social structure made up of clans, forums and an in game chat window.
The Kingdom of Loathing (or KoL, as it has come to be known by its player base) is a free, comical RPG, brought to you by the folks at Asymmetric Publications.
KoL is currently in open beta -- it's open to the public to play, but it's not quite finished. More features and things to do are being added on a nearly daily basis. Despite its unfinished state, it has already attracted a thriving community of interesting, intelligent, and helpful players.
KoL is, and always will be, free to play, but donations are appreciated and rewarded.
KoL is played from the comfort of your browser, and is adorned with a staggering array of stunning hand-drawn images. It is turn-based, which means you get a certain number of turns (Adventures) each day. What can you do with these turns? I'm glad you asked.
Come check out the Kingdom of Loathing and find the adventurer in you. And the best part is--it's entirely free. Although for a $10 donation you get a special in game item.
