I wrote this back in April for a challenge at [livejournal.com profile] writerverse but never posted it because it was so short. And sad. But I've been cleaning up my stories folder on my hard drive and found it (I had forgotten I even wrote it).

"How much further?"

Sam glanced over her shoulder at the rest of her team. They looked as haggard as she felt, clothes covered in mud, face coated in grime, hair slick with sweat. They were dirty, injured and beyond exhausted. Not that any of them would ever admit to it.

She realized the colonel had stopped walking. "We have to keep going. It's not safe here."

"Carter, it's as good a place as any."

As if to prove her point a loud crack filled the valley. Sam stared at her chest where a bloom of red was spreading.

The Mountaintop

Stargate SG-1
Cassie, Jack
1118 words
rating: PG
WARNINGS:

It's Father's Day and Cassie is finally understanding the significance of all these Earth celebrations. All it took was a little trip to the top of a mountain.

don't own... wish I did, but I don't. No infringement intended.

I learned pretty quick that on Earth there are certain days that mean a great deal to certain people. Christmas. Thanksgiving. The Fourth of July. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations. Mother's Day. Father's Day. Over the year's I've celebrated them all. For me, for my friends, my mom, the world. But Father's Day was one that escaped me.

Mom—Janet—told me to spend the day remembering my father. But the whole thing was a new concept to me. Every day on Hanka was reason to celebrate our parents. Any relationship really. When you live in constant fear of the Goa'uld destroying your life you begin to focus on those things—things that really matter. But I tried because she asked me to. It just made me sad, though.

There was this one day, though... I think I was fifteen. I remember the weather was gorgeous, the sun shining and you could see for miles. Forever. Jack took me to the top of this mountain where we just stood and watched the valley below. The trees swayed in the cool breeze, birds floated on the air above us. In the distance you could just see the highway snaking through the pass, people going about their lives oblivious to our scrutiny from high above.

Jack didn't say much while we were there. Mostly his words were lessons about hiking, telling trees apart, bird calls. Not falling off the cliff. And what to do if I found myself lost in the woods. A lot of it I already knew but I listened intently because it was Jack. Even at my most rebellious I'd do anything to not disappoint him.

When the sun started falling to the West he put his hand on my shoulder and I knew our quiet day alone was coming to an end. But what surprised me more than anything, more than him just popping up at our house and expecting me to follow along, was what he said next.

His voice was so soft I almost didn't hear it over the calls of the hawks, the rush of wind through the branches of the nearest trees. "I used to take Charlie here," he told me. "A long time ago. I'm sure he would have loved to have been anywhere else but..." He trailed off, his gaze looking out to the surrounding mountains. "It seemed important."

He squeezed my shoulders then put his shades back on. I tried to ignore the glassy look to his eyes. Or the way his voice trembled ever so slightly. Those weren't the kinds of things you brought up with Jack. They'd only be met with denial. Instead I caught up with him twenty feet down the path and slipped my hand into his. He looked down, completely caught off guard, and seemingly confused. I let my cheek fall against the worn denim of his jacket, the warmth of his body quickly pulling through to my chilled cheek. I couldn't help but rub against, finding instant comfort in the closeness.

Jack halted, his eyes fixed on our interlocked hands. I have no idea what was going through his head. I'm not sure I wanted to. Jack has too many secrets. Too many skeletons in his closet as Mom used to say. But, really, I didn't have to know exactly what he was thinking because I'm sure it was pretty close to what I was feeling. I wrapped both arms around his, tugging him forward but his feet wouldn't follow. I finally stopped and stared up at him, hoping he'd move. Or just say something. Anything.

He swallowed hard. Once, twice... three times before he seemed to get control. "Cass..." His voice caught in his throat. It was almost painful to watch him like this, completely at a loss for words, confused and emotionally raw. I was never more thankful for his sunglasses because I didn't want to see his eyes.

A few beats and I couldn't stand it any more. I let go of his arm and slid my arms around his waist, letting my ear rest against his chest where I could hear his heart beating in a steady, if rapid, pace. Slowly, his arms fell around me, engulfing me in a sense of contentment and warmth and safety that I hadn't felt in a long time. I hadn't even known I was missing it until that moment. And then it all came rushing in.

Or out. Because I couldn't stop my tears like Jack could. He didn't say anything, just held me until the sobs stopped. Then he wiped my face with his rough fingers and gave me that lopsided grin. "What was that about?"

I took a deep breath. The debate over what to tell him lasted only seconds because, really, the only thing appropriate was the truth. "I love you," I whispered, the words fluttering away on the wind.

Jack shifted his weight. Pulled at the cuffs of his jacket. Fidgeted with the contents of his pocket. All signs of discomfort but I didn't care because I needed to say this stuff. Now before I lost my courage. Before it was too late like with Mom.

"I love you and I don't care if you think I'm crazy for saying it. Janet has been great all these years, taking care of me and being the best mom I could hope for... And I know today is Father's Day and you're missing your real kid-" The tears sprung into my eyes, unwanted, blurring my vision of Jack's face. "But I'm glad you brought me here. And I'm sure Charlie loved the time he spent with you even if he complained because I can't imagine being anywhere today but with you. You are the closest thing I have to a dad and I don't know what I'd do without you and I'm sorry I didn't get you anything, sometimes I'm so selfish-" The words rushed out, some I hadn't intended to say at all.

Jack let me catch my breath without a word then, when I was resembling a less insane person, he hugged me tight and whispered in my ear. "Thank you, Cassie, I really needed to hear that."

And then we went back to the car and for the first time in years I fell whole. I had Janet and I had Jack and that was really all I needed. I knew they'd both do anything for me and would be there for me as long as they possibly could. Watching Jack as we drove down the mountain I had a feeling he was thinking the very same thing. And feeling just as content.

And that's when I got holidays.

I started this story back in November but then didn't feel like editing (had too much other stuff going on).  Well, I managed to finish it today to my satisfaction.  Originally this was written for [livejournal.com profile] ami_ven from a lonely prompt at [livejournal.com profile] comment_fic.  Her prompt was: Cassie, school on Earth.  And then my imagination kind of went crazy.  Again.  Hope she likes it.

Jack, what are you doing? It's *yawn* oh-four-hundred hours.

Come here and look at this.

What? Oh, god, don't tell me you're still reading fanfiction.

Yeah, it's great.

Please, it's not Shakespeare. It's not even Stephanie Meyer.

Who?

She wrote those books about the sparkling vampires. Like vampires sparkle.

No, not her, the other guy.

Funny. What is so fascinating that you've been up all night?

Here. These two writers have been posting new stories one after the other all night long.

So?

So... the first one is "shaftastic" and the other is "betterthanshaft." Both list Colorado as their location.

Oh, god. What are they writing about?

Well, it started with a craptastic self-insert from shaftastic. Followed by a very hilarious story with Daniel playing slave to sex-goddess, Vala.

I swear I never thought I'd hear you utter a sentence like that and keep a straight face.

Then there was a heated exchange in the reviews. Followed by betterthanshaft countering with a story where Mitchell's rescue attempt goes completely FUBAR and Daniel saves the day and wins the heart of the pretty maiden.

Classic.

It just escalated from there. The last set had Mitchell getting blown up seconds after stepping through the 'Gate. And then Daniel gets accidentally married to a gorgeous native who turns out to really be a guy.

Please, stop...

And the writing just keeps getting worse and worse. Yet I can't seem to stop reading. Like watching a train wreck happen.

How very cliché of you. Ooh, there's a new story. By someone calling themselves, "sexyalienissexy".

Has to be Vala.

Let's see it then.

SEVERAL MINUTES LATER

I need bleach.

Why?

For my eyes. I will never get rid of that image.

I know what you mean.

Why? Why did she have to go there?

Because she's Vala.

But a threesome... with Mitchell and Daniel.

You stopped reading at the end of chapter one, didn't you.

Yeah, why?

Nevermind.

Oh, come on, just tell me.

Fine, but don't say-

I know, I know. Now spit it out, Colonel.

Okay. It wasn't just a threesome.

Wait, what? You mean Teal'c was there, too. Shudder.

Not just Teal'c.

Huh?

It was all of SG-1.

Oh, that sounds kind of kinky.

ALL of SG-1, present AND former.

Wait, you mean.

Apparently, in Vala's reality you and Daniel are very... intimate with each other.

I'll kill her. No, deport her—back to whatever planet they found her.

In the morning, dear, now come back to bed.

I won't be able to sleep for all the nightmares.

At least you only read page one.

About SG-1 in various incarnations mostly.

Really? Lemme see.

No, go find your own computer.

What happened to "what's yours is mine" and all that?

Doesn't apply to laptops.

Since when?

Since you broke mine and I had to spend my last vacation fixing it.

Fine, I won't touch. Just let me look.

*sigh* Fine, but don't say I didn't warn you.

Warn me about... oh, ugh, gaw, that's about Daniel and Vala and it's very-

Graphic?

Why the hell are you reading that?

Because it's a lot easier to stomach than the graphic Sam/Jack fics.

Hey, Jackson, what's up with these Sam/Jack shippers? They seem really obsessed.

Who? What?

Like, look at this one chick. She's doing a Favorite Things list and has a picspam of some of our alien allies. And another with all the bad guys we've taken care out.

You mean that we've taken out before you were part of the "we".

Whatever. Then she has 20 icons dedicated to Sam and General O'Neill. What the hell about the rest of us?

Why do you care?

Because I don't see any icons of me!

So, it's an ego thing.

No, it's a principal thing. How can you make a list and not include the rest of SG-1?

There are other people on this show besides SG-1.

You're missing the point.

Probably because you haven't made one yet.

Teal'c what are your thoughts?

It appears this woman is most enamored with O'Neill. It says on her profile page that she has named her youngest son after him.

Just because she named him Jack doesn't mean she named him after our Jack.

No, it says right here that she named him after a Stargate character.

Well, don't tell Jack, his ego doesn't need any more stroking.

Unlike Colonel Mitchell's.

Funny. I'm just saying that these Sam/Jack shippers are a little... out there. I don't even know where they got this idea from in the first place. It's not like there's anything going on between Sam and the... What?

Nothing. Not a thing.

Teal'c?

You are most blind, Colonel Mitchell.

What does that mean?

What does what mean?

Ah, Vala, she'll side with me. Her ego's bigger than all of ours put together.

What did I miss?

Just Cam getting his panties in a twist because some lady on the internet didn't include him in her favorite things about Stargate.

And because he was unaware of the relationship between O'Neill and Colonel Carter.

Really? Because I thought that was pretty obvious and I barely know General O'Neill.

Forget about Sam and the general. Can we just get back to the issue at hand?

What was that again?

Ugh... the lack of the rest of us on this list.

Don't care.

Nor do I.

Hmmm. Doesn't really bother me either. It's just one Sam/Jack fan. If you want something that will really spin your head you should check out this list of Daniel/Vala shippers. It's massive.

What!?!

Oh, Daniel, why are you so surprised. And it's mostly porn.

Of course it is.

I think I'm going to be ill, I did not need to know that.

Indeed.

The room's dark, but Daniel likes it that way. And the song on the radio is depressing and full of sadness. That's okay with him, too. It fits his mood. He's on the floor—he thinks in his bedroom—still dressed in the clothes he wore yesterday. He has no idea how long he's been lying there. Time seems to have little meaning, just blurring together along with his vision. Last thing he remembers is popping open his fifth beer. Things get fuzzy after that.

It takes a lot longer to heal this time. That's probably a sign to throw in the towel. But Jack plugs on. Not much point in it anyway when he's just sitting around his house. Actually it's a bit of a luxury.

So, our last challenge for phase 7 at [livejournal.com profile] stargateland (*sniffles*) is to write a Mary Sue story.  Funny, but I put this challenge on my list of things to do at [livejournal.com profile] writerverse way back in December, I think.  Great minds think alike.

Of course all we needed was 100 words.  But this is me so I ended up with 1000 words.  The story just kind of took off and I went with it.  Actually I wanted to keep writing more but cut myself off.  It's a "younger" version of me, before kids and all the crazy that is my current life.  But it's me under there somewhere.  Although I'm not very Mary Sue-ish.  But whatever.

This was fun to write.

I'm not sure why I'm here. It's not like I have any fantastic skill or talent. I'm just... me. But I'm here now. Last thing I remember is standing in line at the grocery store. And then I wasn't. Instead I found myself staring out a window looking down on Earth surrounded by a bunch of strangers.

Another story that was supposed to be short and just got away with me.  Oh well.  For the alphabet soup challenge at [livejournal.com profile] stargateland.

There were a few things Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell must have missed in his SGC orientation. If he was honest with himself, some of it was probably covered but he was too busy not paying absolute attention to the video. Completely unintentional, of course. It was just that Jackson tended to get wordy and his voice was on a frequency that Cam's brain naturally tuned out. He noticed that after their first few briefings.

EDIT: I just realized how many horrible, horrible spelling mistakes this thing had.  I apologize to all.  Apparently my spellcheck quit on libreoffice when I wrote this and I didn't notice.  Until today when I went to post it to AO3 and saw all the red squiggly lines.  *facepalm*

This started out as a response to a challenge at stargateland.  The prompt was simply "luck" and the fic only needed to be 100 words.  I figured I could finish it quick and maybe write 300-400 words, something silly and gen.  And then my muse decided to show up and next thing I know the thing is 4000 words and heavy on the Sam/Jack UST.

I didn't really have a lot of time to research Irish traditions and history so it's mostly on the generic side.  And my little saying is made up (as far as I know).  The one Jack says is real, though.

Stepping out of the 'Gate was like stepping into the past. The simple stone buildings with their thatched roofs and rough-hewn doors looked like something out of a Thomas Kinkade painting. The locals looked a bit confounded as the blue event horizon blinked out of existence leaving the town square feeling a little closed in.

Okay, something different from me.  I don't usually post WIP.  I stopped doing that completely years ago and removed all my unfinished stories from ff.net.  BUT... I started this for another writerverse prompt (shimmer) and it kind of just took off.  Actually it sort of turned into a story I had thought of months ago.  But it's a much bigger story to tell.  Since I need to post this for points I'm going to leave it as "unfinished" or open or whatever you want to think of it.  I'll try to post some more parts as I think of them.  Just a warning, don't read if you don't like WIP.

Carter's eyes shimmered with a fierceness Jack hadn't seen in awhile. Or ever directed at him. He definitely went too far this time. But dammit—she'd been so out of it after a string of failed missions. He had to do something to get her back on track, to light a fire in her. This was Sam Carter. It was her job to save the world. A little pressure would do her good, get her motivated. Crack down, he'd thought, and she'd rise out of her funk. Or so he had thought.

Pink nail polish. Jack was kind of surprised this shocked him. It made sense; Carter was a woman after all. And, as he recalled from his years of marriage, women tended to like painting their toes.

But Carter? Pink?

His eyes traveled up from his 2IC's toes wiggling in the warm sand. Past her BDU pants rolled around her shapely calves. Past the holster strapped securely to her thigh. Past where her tac vest hugged the curve of her waist.

Up to the nape of her neck, slightly red from the sun, to the way her hair curled around the edge of her cap. To her smile—lips partly open, eyes twinkling.

"Sir?"

Jack shook himself mentally, realizing Carter had been watching him stare at her.

"Nothin'," he mumbled. She gave him a quizzical look then went back to watching the waves lapping against the beach.

Stupid, Jack thought. Now was not the time to realize Carter was a women. And a damn good looking one. And funny. And smart—way smarter than him. And gorgeous. His eyes drifted back to the pink peeking out of the sand, his pulse quickening slightly. Oh, no, he was in trouble. So much trouble.

Summer 1957, somewhere in rural Minnesota

Little Johnny squatted near the edge of the pond, a long stick in one hand. He was all dirty face and scabby knees, tanned from head to foot, clothed only in cutoff jeans and a torn t-shirt. He rubbed at the sunburn on his neck, poking a fish with the stick. He watched as it quickly changed direction, trying to remember what his grampa had told him about fishing.
