so sad

I just watched the news this morning, looking for school closings, to find out that a Southwest Airlines jet broke through the Central Ave at 55th Street and killed a little boy. I want to cry. It has to be those pregnancy hormones. It is just so awful.

There have been so many times I have sat at home thinking about something like that happening. I even asked dh about it several times--what if a plane slid off the runway? He always laughed and said it wasn't likely. He isn't up yet so I haven't been able to ask him what he thinks. He had the day off yesterday. I wonder what the guys were thinking at work.

Midway is shut down. If we were still in Chicago he'd be sitting at home anyway without anything to do. I feel so bad, too, because Southwest had such a great record. I don't think they have had an accident in forever.

I just can't stop thinking about that poor family. That little boy is just a year older then Meagan. It could easily be someone I know and it kills me. I need to stop watching the news. I'm just too emotional anymore.

Yesterday's snow was pretty awful, and I don't think that they were expecting it. The predictions were for 3 to 6 inches, and the actuality about 10 inches. The plane went through the fence about the time that the storm became incredibly heavy (and where I was--about 40 miles north of MID--the visuality had degraded pretty fast around that time just due to the amount of snowfall coming down).

I don't think that Southwest has ever had an accident.

I think they have had a few small ones. Patrick mentioned once that a plane skid off of a runway but no one was hurt. That was years and years ago. Their record is almost spotless. He was absolutely shocked when I told him this morning and got online to read all the reports.

He was surprised they hadn't closed the runways. He's worked through snow storms and blizzards at Midway. They get paid to hand out during those times. I remember in 2000 (right around my birthday in December) there was a huge storm. I was stuck at home with the baby and he was at work doing nothing but talking to me on the phone about how bored he was. The next morning we spent a good two hours digging the car out so he could go back to work. Just gotta love winter in Chicago, huh? We got about 3 or 4 inches here in good ole Pittsburgh. It wasn't as bad as people had thought it would be. We got the kids out and they made snow angels for awhile.
